Getting IPTV Onto a Roku: What Works and What Does Not

Installing and signing in

1. Search the Roku store for a player

   Press Home and open the store, labelled Streaming Channels or Apps depending on your software version, or use Search. Look for IPTV Smarters Player or a similar IPTV player and check the publisher and ratings before adding it. If nothing suitable appears, skip ahead to the mirroring steps; listings in this category change often and differ by country.

2. Sign in with your Xtream Codes details

   Open the app, pick the Xtream Codes option and enter your username, password and the full server URL including http:// and the port. The on-screen keyboard on Roku is slow going. If the official Roku mobile app is on your phone, its keyboard feature lets you type into the TV from the handset instead.

3. Enable screen mirroring with a prompt

   For the mirroring route, open Settings, System, Screen mirroring. Set Screen mirroring mode to Prompt rather than Always allow. With Prompt selected, anyone else on your Wi-Fi, a visiting friend or a neighbour who once had the password, cannot push something onto your screen without you accepting it first.

4. Mirror from your phone or computer

   On Android, use Cast or Smart View from the quick settings panel and choose the Roku. On Windows, press Win+K and select it from the list. On an iPhone, AirPlay works with Roku models that support it. Start the player on that device and the picture appears on the television. It works reliably, but the phone or laptop is occupied for as long as you watch.

5. Reduce what Roku collects

   Under Settings, Privacy, Advertising, turn on Limit ad tracking. On Roku TVs, Settings, Privacy, Smart TV Experience contains Use info from TV inputs; switch it off to stop the TV recognising what plays through HDMI and antenna inputs. Neither change affects apps or mirroring, and both take under a minute.

6. Consider a dedicated stick for that screen

   If IPTV is the main reason that television gets used, a Fire TV Stick or Android TV device at roughly $30 to $50 on a spare HDMI port removes every Roku limitation at once. The Roku stays where it is for the apps it does well, and the login lives on hardware that fully supports it.

7. Keep the phone you mirror from locked

   When you mirror, the login lives on your phone rather than the Roku. Make sure the handset has a screen lock, and use the parental or app lock inside the player if children borrow the phone to watch something.

8. Remove players you stop using

   Highlight the app on the Roku home screen, press the star button on the remote and choose Remove. Clearing out IPTV players you no longer use keeps stored logins off the device and tidies the home screen at the same time.

Known problems and what fixes them

The IPTV app disappeared from the store

Roku removes listings in this category from time to time, which is why we will not promise that any particular app will be there. Your MYTIVIFLIX account is unaffected. Switch to mirroring, or move that television to a Fire TV or Android device.

Mirroring connects and then drops

Keep the phone reasonably close to the router and the Roku, turn off battery saver on the phone, and use the 5 GHz band if your router offers it. Some VPN apps interfere with local casting, so pause the VPN on the phone while mirroring at home if the connection keeps falling over.

The Roku does not appear in the Windows cast list

Confirm the PC and the Roku are on the same network and that mirroring is not set to Never allow. On the Roku, check Settings, System, Screen mirroring, Screen mirroring devices, where devices you previously blocked are listed and can be allowed again.

Picture lags behind the sound while mirroring

Mirroring compresses the screen twice, once on the phone and once on the way to the TV, so a little delay is normal. Close other apps on the phone, lower the stream quality inside the player, and move closer to the router if it becomes distracting.

Screen mirroring is not in the menu

Most Roku TVs and streaming sticks support mirroring from Android and Windows, but some older players do not. If Settings, System has no Screen mirroring entry, that model cannot receive it, and a store app or a different device is the remaining route.

Mirroring shows sound but a black picture

Some apps block their video from screen capture and mirroring, and the television then shows nothing. Try a different player on the phone, or open the stream in VLC on the phone and mirror that instead.

Keeping your login to yourself

The server address, username and password you have just typed in are your whole account, so treat them the way you would a banking password. Leave them out of screenshots, family group chats and forum posts, and if you send support a photo of the screen, cover the password field first. If you suspect your details have been shared around, ask support on WhatsApp to change the password on your line. Where you want your internet provider or a public network kept out of your viewing, the player works over the common VPN apps; connect to a nearby server before opening it.
